Islamic Culture & Arts

A Living Civilization

From the courtyards of Córdoba to the blue domes of Samarkand, from Fez and Cairo to Istanbul, Isfahan, Lahore and Java — discover a civilization expressed through architecture, calligraphy, geometry, literature, music, craftsmanship, food, fashion and living traditions.

01 · A Civilization of Many Cultures

One civilization. Extraordinary cultural diversity.

Islamic culture developed across Africa, the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Central Asia, South Asia and Southeast Asia, interacting continuously with local languages, materials, traditions and artistic vocabularies.

Culture Without Borders

Islamic art is not a single artistic style.

The cultural history of Muslim societies encompasses Arabic, Persian, Turkic, Amazigh, Andalusian, African, Mughal, Malay, Central Asian and many other traditions.

Calligraphy, geometry and vegetal ornament created powerful shared visual languages, while local materials and traditions produced dramatically different forms of architecture, textiles, ceramics, manuscripts, music and decorative arts.

The result is not cultural uniformity, but an enormous network of interconnected artistic civilizations.
